Lex and I went to a local car boot sale earlier today and whilst looking around for some new materials I could try and etch, I found a box of ceramic tiles for 20p.

My thought was that if I couldnt get them to work in the etcher, then it wasn’t an expensive waste.

FIrst of all, when I tried to etch the tiles, nothing much happened ehich was quite frustrating and I must admit I said a rude word (or three!). But undefeated I thought I would use my old favourite prep material…..Black Permanent Marker!

Luckily this did actually make something happen, although the etching is subtle and not promanent.

Once cleaned off with isopropanol this is the final result.

The surface of the glaze has not broken and the laser appears to have penetrated and burned the top layer of the ceramic. I did try to use a different colour ink, to see if it would colour the end result, but it didnt work.

The end result is very good though and if the tiles were mounted on the wall with grout, it creates a permanent mark that cannot be removed with any cleaning chemicals.
